Biological Activity
Nicosulfuron is a selective sulfonylurea herbicide that inhibits acetolactate synthase (ALS), an enzyme critical for branched-chain amino acid biosynthesis. It provides post-emergence control of grasses and some broadleaf weeds in corn.
Spectrum and Route of Action:
Systemic herbicide rapidly absorbed by foliage and roots and translocated via both xylem and phloem. Susceptible weeds stop growing within hours; chlorosis and necrosis appear within 1-3 weeks. Corn rapidly metabolizes the compound.
Scope of Application:
Controls a wide range of weeds including:
• Annual grasses (green foxtail, giant foxtail, yellow foxtail, barnyardgrass, crabgrass, fall panicum)
• Perennial grasses (johnsongrass, quackgrass, quackgrass)
• Some broadleaf weeds (lambsquarters, pigweeds, ragweed, velvetleaf)
Mainly used on:
• Corn/maize (field corn, seed corn, sweet corn, popcorn)
• Grain sorghum (with appropriate safener)
